Billy Halcrow Subdivision, Cross Lake First Nation, Manitoba

Tanya Hutchens is deeply interested in charitable causes and therefore community of Cross Lake First Nations, Manitoba which is presented in the CMHC project is of great merit. Cold weather adds significant expense to housing operating costs in Canada's north and can delay or inflate construction budgets as well. Geothermal heating systems may provide solutions to both challenges.

The Cross Lake First Nation, with a population of 6200, is located north of Lake Winnipeg about an eight-hour drive from Winnipeg. Its land base is typical of the Canadian Shield - low-lying thin soils, with lakes and waterways interspersed throughout.

The population of Cross Lake is growing steadily but its easily developed land has already been put to use. In addition to the costs of new construction, the First Nation faces the challenge of keeping its members comfortable and healthy at an affordable cost through cold winters.

The Affordable Housing Solution Reviewed by Tanya Hutchens
Geothermal heat, an alternative energy solution that reduces green house gas emissions, is also a key component in the creation of 34 units of family housing in Cross Lake.

A new subdivision was created for the 34 three-bedroom units, which include eight four-plexes and one duplex. Not only are the rents low at $344 per month, but residents will see substantial savings on their utility bills because of the geothermal heat system used. Moreover, they will have air-conditioning in the frequently hot summer months at no additional cost.
